What Should Parents Be Mindful of Before Investing in New Flooring?

Being a parent is difficult. You need to account for the children before making any decision. This also applies to redecorating the family home. Not only do you run the risk of wasting money (because children are somewhat accident-prone), but you also might be putting your family in harm’s way if you’re not careful.

This is especially important when it comes to choosing new floors. So, here are some different things parents should consider before investing in new flooring for your home.

The Pricing

First and foremost, parents should invest in new flooring which is high-quality but also affordable. Like we mentioned before, children are accident-prone. Until they’re grown up, there’s no point spending an inordinate amount of money on the flooring because it will quickly get damaged.

As such, we recommend looking at some different flooring stores with good reviews and competitive pricing. This way you can get the best value for your money. Wood Floor Warehouse is particularly great in this regard because they regularly price check, ensuring customers always get outstanding value for less money.

Non-Allergenic

Parents also need to consider the hygiene of certain types of flooring before investing in anything. After all, the health of our children should always come first. We suggest avoiding things like carpet, particularly for the hallways, kitchens and dining rooms. Carpet is an absorbent material, so substances will sink into the fabric without you realising it. From here, harmful bacteria can begin to grow.

If you have young children crawling around on the floor, this can pose them a real risk of developing a nasty bug. Furthermore, carpet tends to catch things like dust motes and pollen, which can stimulate an allergic reaction in your children.

Posing Risk

It’s worth giving some thought to how your new flooring might put your children at risk. For instance, parents should avoid investing in wooden decking for their gardens because this can get incredibly slippery in wet weather, making your kids liable to serious injury.

The same applies to tiled floors. Instead of choosing materials which are slippery and hard, we recommend investing in something like laminate or vinyl flooring. These materials are usually fitted with an underlay which helps to cushion impact. This means if your children fall over and hit their heads on them, they are much less likely to seriously hurt themselves.

Low Maintenance

All family homes are chaotic, making them prone to accidents. This includes things like spillages and damages. As such, parents should focus on looking at low maintenance options in flooring stores – something water-resistant and durable. This means when food is dropped, it can be easily brushed away or mopped up.

Durability is important because your new floorboards will be more scratch-resistant, helping them to maintain their appearance for longer. So, remember to choose a material which facilitates cleaning and prevents damage.

These are the main things for parents to consider before investing in new flooring. We hope you have found this information useful.

  1. As someone who has recently redone the whole downstairs of my home, this is such a needed article! I do not have children, but plenty of fur babies and a clumsy hubby, plenty of dinner parties (pre lockdown at least!) and a busy lifestyle. Picking something as simple as flooring has so many factors to it, as you said – easy maintenance, non scratch, non slip, cosy, looking good, cost effective – I definitely found it helped to have some samples, and to use places that had reviews with pictures!!
