The Most Perfect Spa Day Ever
I am a spa expert. Yes, I can make that statement. I have been to so many over the years, in many different countries. And in June I got to experience the wonder of Charlton House Hotel & Spa, near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Read on for my experience of 24 hours of bliss, relaxation, inspiration and the best 5km time EVER.
This spa weekend has been planned for months. Buy A Gift asked me to choose a location to review which presented a perfect opportunity to have a mini holiday with my wonderful friend Rebecca. The venue needed to be somewhere between London and Bristol. Charlton House popped up on my search and it looked beautiful. It was a three-hour drive for me, but I could go via Bristol and collect Bec on route. Date was agreed for 24th/25th June and it was booked.
Perfect timing to celebrate Bec’s birthday and a time to reflect on my mum. It was the 25th year anniversary of her death.
We had booked a 24-hour spa weekend package. This included a beautiful twin room, one treatment, full use of the spa and gym facilities for 24 hours, dinner and a glass of prosecco each and breakfast on the Sunday morning. All of this was £249 for both of us. An INCREDIBLE bargain.
We arrived at 1pm dead on time for the time we could arrive from, we wanted to take full advantage of our 24 hours of relaxation. We were taken to our room, Tudor Animals which was amazing! It was very red with beautiful art, books, very comfy beds. A beautiful bathroom with free standing bath and rainfall shower. The toiletries were high quality posh. Our robes and slippers were laid out on the bed. There was a beautiful selection of tea and coffee, including real filter coffee.
We unpacked, changed into our bikinis and hit the spa. Our room was overlooking the spa area of pool, steam rooms, jacuzzi, jet pools. The weather was perfect, 25 degrees, sun shine all weekend long.
We both had facials booked for 2pm. My therapist was amazing and really knew her stuff. She created a facial perfect for my skin type. I wanted something to revitalise tired skin and give me a glow. It worked. The facial was amazing. Becky had never had a facial before in her life, and I suspect now might be a convert. Whilst we were in the spa we booked in to get our nails done before dinner. This cost an extra £20 each.
We then had four hours and it was a beautiful day, so we relocated to the gardens overlooking the hotel and laid on the huge sun loungers, the kind of lounger that you would pay $300 to lie on in the Bellagio in Las Vegas. We laid there for the entire four hours.
Bec and I have been friends for 30 years, we met aged 11 at secondary school we were both in class 1H2, Humphry Davy, Penzance. She had recently moved to Cornwall from Yorkshire and I was a born and bred Penzance dweller. We became firm friends very quickly and stayed friends all throughout school, college, university and beyond. We were at the same level academically so were in all the same classes together. There is alot we have been through together, the good, the bad and the damned ugly. But have always been there to guide and help.
So, we put the world to rights, we talked business, relationships, family, health, life, death. You name it we talked about it. And we worked out that we hadn’t had 24 hours together, with just us forever. We had a few drinks and nibbles whilst sat on the sun loungers and I did have the most amazing strawberry gin and tonic.
In the evening we had dinner. The food was very special. We could choose from starter and main or main and dessert. We both went for the starter option. I had the cured meat platter and Bec went for the ham hock terrine. Then for main I went for fish on a bed of seasonal vegetables and Bec had the vegetarian aubergine gratin option. All the food was amazing, and we couldn’t stop eating it despite being very full. The service was friendly and informative, full marks for dinner.
We retired for the evening to our room and chatted until our eye shut, whilst still talking.
Sunday morning, I was up early as normal. I chucked on the gym clothes and did some exercise. Running is a favourite exercise routine but never on the treadmill, so I thought I would run a proper timed 5k. I am so glad I did. My exercise routine with Kane has worked well, my fitness has improved, and I was able to run a 5k in less than 30 minutes. For the FIRST TIME EVER. I did it in 29 mins 53 seconds and I was beyond happy. Also, very tired.
A tiny bit of work ensued where I went out to the empty gardens, I was the only one awake at 6:30 am and did a little Facebook Live of the grounds!
I got back to the room, chilled with a cup of coffee, showered and we headed for breakfast. Well breakfast! Dinner was amazing, but breakfast was one of the best breakfasts we have both ever had. There were buffet bits of bread, fruit, cereal, jam, all the drinks you could imagine. Plus, we could choose an item from the menu, full English, eggs benedict etc. We both choose American pancakes and they were honestly the best pancakes I have ever had, beating all of those I have had in America.
We kept eating until we felt sick. They were such good pancakes. We had around 4 more hours to enjoy the spa, so we switched between lounging, pool, reading, swimming, sauna, steam room, sun loungers again until it was 1pm and we had to leave.
Such a great weekend and a spa that I highly recommend for a great value break in absolute luxury. Remember all this cost just £249 for two of us. Perfect for a romantic weekend away or a girly weekend. Book your spa weekend with Buy A Gift here.
